Our story

Hi. We are Doris and Peter, founders of Okapi toy library. We first got in contact with the concept of sharing toys trough a lending system while living in the United States of America.

To play is to have fun.

We moved there with our daughter Jasmine, who was 4 months old at the time. We were only going to stay for two years, and did not want to buy much toys. We did not have the space to store much in our small town house and we were afraid they might end up in the dumpster if we could not find another home for them when moving back to Belgium. Yet we did want Jasmine to play. We did want to give her toys. A neighbor recommended us the local toy library. It was fantastic. Every four weeks we brought Jasmine a new set of toys home. Some were real hits, others she did not touch. Every month we could try something new, without wasting money on toys Jasmine would never use, without piling them up in our small living room, and with the guarantee that other kids would enjoy them afterwards.

Shared joy is double joy.

It was a life saver. It was so great, we wanted more people to be able to enjoy such a service. Okapi toy library was born. Our mission is to bring toy lending services to as much people as possible. We are convinced that by sharing toys we can make the world a more cheerful and clean place. Our lending services strive to make toys accessible for all and encourage a culture of sustainability. Okapi toy library is here because playing is fun, and sharing makes it even better. Let’s share, let’s play! We hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

For my daughter it is Sinterklaas every month. The moment when I unpack the toy library bag and she discovers the new toys, that is pure enjoyment.

Done with the mess. I think that's the best thing about borrowing toys. After a while my sons are done playing with something, and then there it is. Now we just bring that back and done.

The variety of toys I can offer my kids without it costing us a fortune, that is just fantastic. They learn so much while playing and I don't have to worry about the ecological footprint of all those toys. Double win.

Some things are a real hit, while there are others she barely touches. You don't know in advance what your child will be interested in. Through the toy library we can now test stuff before we go buy it. Not interested? No problem. Fantastic? Then we buy that. Or we borrow it again.

Me and my boyfriend like to play board games. We have our favorites that we play over and over, but we also like to test new ones. We used to have to buy all those games, without the guarantee that we would actually like them. Now we can test them through the Okapi toy library. Or just borrow them if we are up for boardgame night. Done with the closet full of unused game boxes.
